Interview: JJ of Harakiri for the Sky Talks ‘Scorched Earth’

Scorched Earth, the highly anticipated album from Harakiri for the Sky, out January 24 via AOP Records, is poised to be a profound and introspective journey. Vocalist JJ (Michael V. Wahntraum) says te album has been a long time coming. The unexpected cause of the pandemic provided an opportunity for the band to refine Scorched Earth and even begin work on new material.

“The pandemic forced us to slow down and really focus on our music. It was a blessing in disguise. We used that extra time to delve deep into the songs and explore new directions,” JJ says.

Scorched Earth delves deep into personal themes, including relationships, substance abuse, and depression. And yet the album doesn’t shy away from addressing broader global issues like the war in Ukraine, the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, and the pressing environmental crisis. These themes are poignantly reflected in the album’s title.

JJ emphasizes the therapeutic nature of songwriting and performing. “Writing songs and performing them live is a cathartic experience. It allows me to process my emotions and share them with others. Music has always been a powerful tool for me to express myself and connect with people,” he explains.

Harakiri for the Sky are eagerly anticipating their upcoming U.S. tour. “I’ve always loved visiting the US. I have fond memories of exploring national parks like Yellowstone and experiencing the diverse culture. The energy of the American audience is unmatched,” they shared. The tour, featuring Ghost Bath, will cover much of the U.S.

Despite the recent release of Scorched Earth, the band’s creative engine continues to churn. JJ reveals, “I’m constantly jotting down ideas, using downtime during tours and travels to fuel my songwriting process. There’s always something brewing in my mind. Music is a constant source of inspiration for me.”

Scorched Earth promises to be a deeply personal and universally relatable album. With its exploration of personal struggles, global anxieties, and the catharsis found in music, the record is poised to resonate with listeners seeking a powerful and introspective musical experience. The band’s dedication to their craft and their passion for performing live make them a force to be reckoned with. As they embark on their U.S. tour, fans can expect a captivating and emotionally charged performance that will leave a lasting impression.
