In the issue, we chat with Nile about their new record, The Underworld Awaits Us All, out August 23 via Napalm Records.
“Nile is unconcerned with delusions of functioning as an ethnomusicological museum conservatory,” guitarist and vocalist Karl Sanders says in relation to the fact that they took some musical liberties, such as adding in a Southern gospel choir, on this album. “We are more likely closer to ethnomusicological cannibals in that we are first and foremost a metal band.”
The riff-master adds, “The eastern modalities and tonalities that form the basis of our guitar riffing also shares a heritage with the legacy of all metal riffing, and is by its very nature, a crossbreeding and repurposing of diverse ideas. That’s the opposite of preserving ancient culture because we are taking those ideas and making metal with them.”
