Long Beach, California singer and producer and founder of the GOTHBOICLIQUE collective Cold Hart announced his latest album Pretty in the Dark will be released on May 17 on legendary label Epitaph Records. Cold Hart says about the album’s title: “I like standing out in the dark woods and feeling how calm it is. That’s how the album is; instead of the dark being scary, it’s nice.”
For Pretty in the Dark, the singer/producer enlisted the assistance of producer, engineer, and mixer Andrew Dawson, who has worked with such diverse artists as Jay-Z and Code Orange. Relinquishing some control to Dawson made it easier for him to delve into his own mind on this album, as did the assistance of fellow GBC member YAWNS. “Working with Andrew and YAWNS together really pushed me to try out new things on this album,” the artist says. “I really wanted it to have a feeling of familiarity at the same time.”
To coincide with the album announcement comes the release of the first single “2017,” which features GOTHBOICLIQUE. “A memoir of one of the craziest years in my life,” he explains about the single.“’2017”’is a newer take on old GBC style, and almost every line is a homage to those days and most of the lyrics are references to old songs.” The video for the song, directed by Blindlight, revels in punk aesthetics while musically blending lo-fi electronics with hip-hop and pop-punk and just classic pop melodies.
