Video Premiere: Caleb De Casper – ‘Do It Baby’

Austin-based queer artist and provocateur Caleb De Casper is sharing his newest music video, “Do It Baby,” and you can take a look right here at New Noise.

De Casper’s new video comes off the recent release of his new, disco-inspired debut album, Femme Boy, a clear evolution from the glam rock horror cabaret vibe in his debut EP. acting as a musical match to his over-the-top performances.

It’s as though the classically trained pianist has a fire lit beneath his stilettos, looking back to the teachers and reps who loved his music but told him he was “too gay” to succeed. De Casper is setting out to prove those folks wrong, and based on the reception of his music so far, he’s well on his way. The City of Austin declared April 21 Caleb De Casper Day, and tastemaker radio station KUTX named him June’s Artist of the Month. He also has a busy lineup of diverse events slated for Pride Month.

The new, steamy video for “Do It Baby” blends Marfa, Texas landscapes over the bodies of men locked in embrace, asking viewers to examine their initial reactions to such images especially in relation to heteronormative displays of affection.

Casper describes his thought process behind the video:

“I’m very glad that we chose to portray beautiful, natural masculine bodies instead of the ‘toned-and-chiseled’ men you would typically see in the entertainment industry. Male body positivity and the pressure to look like an Adonis is not something that is taken very seriously, but unachievable standards of beauty and fitness also weigh heavy on men, especially gay men.”

The song itself discusses the abandonment of self-doubt and the doubts of others. The track further explains why Caleb wears his queer heart on his sleeve.

“I didn’t care if I didn’t have the money or the ‘success’ or the heteronormative ‘look’ that these industry people were comfortable with. I just had to trust my creative intuition and do it no matter what results followed,” he says. “Now I know to apply that lesson to everything I do.”
