Album Review: Kim Deal – Nobody Loves You More

4/5

Kim Deal is an icon in rock music. She is most known for being the frontwoman of The Breeders and was the original bassist of the Pixies. Both bands are alternative rock legends. They helped shape alternative rock and their influences can still be heard today. When looking back at some of the most celebrated musicians of the ’80s and ’90s, Deal’s name is sure to appear. Considering how long Deal has been in the music scene, it might surprise people that she has never released a solo album. Nobody Loves You More is the debut solo album from Deal, and what a superb and interesting debut it is.

Nobody Loves You More is at its best when it gets a little weird. Deal seems to be having loads of fun with “Crystal Breath.” It is an eccentric, groovy, and strange track that is constantly entertaining. With a fascinating mixture of styles (techno, industrial, krautrock, and electronica), a frantically dizzy toe-tapping rhythm, hypnotically off-kilter guitar riffs, catchy hooks, and Deal’s contagious energy, “Crystal Breath” is a wonderfully compelling time. “Bats in the Afternoon Sky” gets even more peculiar, resulting in a similarly exciting time.

There are some dynamite alternative rock songs, too. The aggressively messy “Big Ben Beat” is a main standout, with the main highlight being the heavily distorted instrumentation. Another highlight is “Disobedience.” It is badass, especially the guitar tone. Any fan of Deal’s work with Pixies or The Breeders is guaranteed to enjoy this track.

On the other hand, the slow ballads (or soft rock) songs are quite good too. Although the more experimental and alternative rock songs are more memorable and intriguingly charming, there is a lot to admire and enjoy from the soft rock songs. Deal’s voice is absolutely stunning on these tracks, especially in “Are You Mine,” as her voice is beautifully tender and delicate. Furthermore, the atmosphere of the soft rock songs are very comforting, and the instrumentation is cozy. Examples include the sweet and warm melody of “Summerland” and the infectious country-esque vibe and gorgeous brass section of “Coast.”

“A Good Time Pushed” has one of the best bass lines of 2024. The way it smoothly ebbs and flows is perfect. In addition, its free-flowing (somewhat jazzy) nature is relaxing. This is the type of bass line that you could just chill out to for hours. Along with the bass, the track has an awesome guitar solo, one that will stick inside the listeners’ mind.

Overall, Kim Deal’s debut solo album Nobody Loves You More is a great addition to Deal’s impressive career.
