This Friday, Boston Manor release their fifth studio album, Sundiver, offering a fresh perspective and a sense of new possibilities. Unlike the somber Datura, which started a more introspective chapter, Sundiver radiates renewed light and hope.
The album reflects the band’s growth, both personally and musically. Vocalist Henry Cox explains that Sundiver comes from a transformative period. With two band members recently becoming parents, the album celebrates new beginnings and optimism. While Datura captured the dark times of the pandemic, Sundiver symbolizes the bright morning that follows the storm.
Musically, the album explores various influences, from alternative rock to shoegaze. The band draws inspiration from the late ’90s and early 2000s, blending elements from Deftones, Portishead, and Garbage with a modern twist. This results in a vibrant and versatile album that combines catchy rock energy with deeper introspection.
The lead single, “Container,” showcases the band’s new direction with its vibrant energy and lyrics about change and stagnation. “Sliding Doors” nods to 90s rock but features fresh production that anchors it in 2024. This track explores how our decisions can lead to unexpected changes in our lives.
A particularly emotional moment is “What Is Taken Will Never Be Lost,” a slow ballad that addresses the pain of losing Henry Cox’s grandfather. Influenced by Portishead, this song offers a heartfelt tribute, adding depth to the album.
Sundiver benefited from a change of setting, recorded in the serene countryside of Welwyn Garden City. This new environment contributes to the album’s brighter and fresher sound, marking a natural evolution from their previous work.
The cover by local photographer Nick Barkworth features an abstract glass sculpture symbolizing rebirth and new life. This imagery captures the album’s theme and the band’s vision for this new chapter.
Sundiver represents a turning point for Boston Manor, offering a refreshing escape during uncertain times. As the band prepare for their tour, they are ready to share the energy and message of Sundiver with fans, bringing optimism and connection in a chaotic world.
Sundiver will be released on September 6 and is available from SharpTone Records. Follow Boston Manor on social media for future updates.
