Today’s New Noise: Canary Bones

Happy hump day, rockers! Let’s talk about Canary Bones, a brand-new noise rock band out of Melbourne, Australia. They just put out their first release, a four-song demo simply titled Demo that’s currently streaming on all services and is also available on Bandcamp.

The demo opens on the whimsically titled “I Heard You Die at the End,” a with a fairly simple, almost melodic musicality to it paired with an aggressively shouted vocal style that turns a fairly simple little tune into a more complex noise experiment. One could almost classify it as “melodic noise,” which sounds like an oxymoron. Then “Pearls Before Swine” goes into a more aggressive post-hardcore style while maintaining that same aggressive vocal style, making a track that was already a sonic powerhouse into something more abrasive.

“Hard Year” comes in with a breakneck beat that could almost be called hardcore, but then shifts into another interesting contrast between noise and melody, continuing the demo’s common theme. Finally, the longest song on the demo, the epic “Service Delivery Failure,” opens with noisy sound effects and the sounds of birds squawking before transforming into a noisy,  sludgy cacophony. Again, I keep coming back to the phrase “melodic noise,” in all its obviously contradictory glory, being the best descriptor for this demo. Check it out below.
