Now that Thanksgiving is over (even if your bowel movements are not), ’tis the season for cornballs to start shamelessly singing—in generally ear–piercing fashion—horrendous renditions of vintage Christmas carols that were lame to begin with.
Fortunately for those of us with even just a dash of dignity and a mere modicum of decent taste in music, Chicago crossover trio Paper Mice are bringing us some good cheer courtesy of three reimagined songs aimed at the Cool Kids set. And, lucky for you (and us), they decided to premiere their newest music, Neurotic City EP (Three One G Records), right here on New Noise‘s website.
Paper Mice Gain Their Footing
While Paper Mice technically originated in 2008, the crew came into their own starting in 2013, when Dave Reminick, John Carroll, and Taylor Hales discovered they share a similar, offbeat chemistry (and bizarro sense of humor). Ever since, the experimental, prog-piqued post–punks seem to be having the time of their lives, as evidenced by this wacky video for their song “The Cynic Route.”
Nonetheless, for a band that coalesced 16 years ago, Paper Mice are woefully deficient in terms of recorded material. They only have three studio full-lengths to their name, the most recent of which was called 1-800-MONDAYS, partially recorded at Electrical Audio, home base of the dearly missed engineering giant Steve Albini. 1-800-MONDAYS saw the light of day in May 2021 courtesy of Three One G.
Paper Mice are Never Not Fun
Perhaps because performing and recording cover songs is simply downright fun—especially when they’re as cheesy as the ones Paper Mice chose for their EP—the band are giddy as can be for the December 6 release.
“We’ve asked some of our favorite friends and artists to join us” for the affair, the band posted Wednesday on Paper Mice’s Facebook page. And indeed, it’s a nifty guest list that the band compiled for the Neurotic City EP.
The short–but–sweet EP features three covers, of Captain & Tennille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together (feat. Calvin Fredrickson),” Tina Turner’s “Private Dancer (feat. Nnamdï AKA Nnamdi Ogbonnaya),” and ABBA’s “S.O.S. (feat. Miranda Winters).”
Now that you know just about as much as we do about Paper Mice’s Neurotic City EP, take a gander at New Noise‘s premiere of the three song gem:
