Video Premiere: Staring Problem – ‘The Void’

Chicago-based post-punk/no wave project Staring Problem have existed in one way or another for over 15 years, with an ever shifting lineup churning out gorgeous, ethereal pop songs with a touch of noise. On the band’s upcoming new album Equinox, due out on December 20 from Modern Tapes, the current lineup of Lauren Owen, Michael Erickson, and Andrew Jarosh shared songwriting duties on all the tracks, with the exception of “Don’t Tell a Soul” which is an old song that never got a proper release. Boasting their strongest material and lineup to date, the new album sees the seasoned band hitting their stride.

Today, Staring Problem are debuting the video for their new single “The Void” off Equinox. With a haunting melody reminiscent of Wish-era Cure and a echoing, distant-yet-powerful vocal performance from Owen, this is post-punk that harkens back to the greats of the genre while still putting a stamp of Staring Problem’s distinctive personality on it. The trippy and surreal video is full of striking images of nature in the fall, making it the perfect compliment to the song’s soul-stirring, swirling post-punk elements. Check out the video below.

Equinox is out December 20, and you can preorder it from Modern Tapes. Follow Staring Problem on Facebook and Instagram for future updates.
