With their debut album slated for release next year, Taxi Girls whet our appetites until then with their latest seven-inch, Rainy, out today through a cross-continental partnership between Dirt Cult and Wild Honey Records. Armed with modern mixing methods and analog video equipment, videographer David Don’t engineers the single’s A-side video in VHS gridlines and neon-hue fashion, showcasing the Montreal punk ‘n’ roll unit’s evolution from a trio into a quartet.
Rainy’s motif plays out like a dual-sided Greek theater mask, with each song melodically encapsulating contrasting experiences ranging from disillusionment to content reminiscence. Lyrically, one can tell the tracks stem from a deeply personal place as vocalists Jamie Radu and Vera divulge on experiencing the complexities and consequences of human relations. They summarize the nature of “Rainy” below.
“Rainy was first written during the winter of 2018, blending post-grunge and dark synth-pop influences. Originally, the song explored the emptiness of substance-fuelled lifestyles, and the stark loneliness of realizing party friends aren’t true allies, leaving you in a downward spiral. Fast forward to 2024—The song morphed into a story about an ex-friend who treated us poorly—someone we’ve got dirt on, saved for a rainy day! We had a blast bringing this one to life.”
Rainy is available in multiple color variations and can be preordered here. Follow Taxi Girls on Instagram for all updates, and catch them at the upcoming gigs below.
